That civ ends up taking a diplo hit for warmongering, you get a bunch of leveled up soldiers. After you blow up their army, sell units you don't need and didn't get levels. Then instabuy a huge ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ army and curb stomp their not-quite-prepared invasion force.

They'll back off, but have wasted a ton of time and possibly even resources preparing to invade, and thus be set back.Īlternately, save up a HUGE amount of money and literally let them declare war on you. The moment they start to look like they're about to invade, build a larger army. The civs actually tend to look at your "pointy stick" numbers, which from what I can tell they can actually see, even if you're not the highest one.Ī fun con you can pull on the AI is to keep a very small army and keep an eye outside your borders. If you require a safe and peaceful trade network, it can't hurt to improve diplo through embassies. If you are setting up trade routes, it should be safe to set up embassies as well. Overall, though, I feel embassy pro's outweigh embassy con's by around the Reinaissance, if not a bit sooner, and I will seek them out in the mid game. I have friends that never use embassies, and others that will set them up the first turn they can.

Personally, I don't trade for embassies until I feel I can adequately protect myself with military. Since the other civ "sees" your capitol through the embassy, this is rolling out the red carpet for invaders.
